Mama Ghee

The mother earth/trickster figure prominent in VicollanFolklore and myth. There are mentions of Mama Ghee's children, the number of which ranges from twelve to thirty but none except her youngest daughter, Jolneid, are named. Nor is there ever any mention of a "Mister" Ghee.

The strength of female characters in Mama Ghee stories led many Vicollan anthropologists to guess that early on, the culture was matriarchal. When the native keepers of VicollanFolklore realized the anthropologists' views, they pointed out that the stories were balanced against others less female-oriented, and that folklore was idealized anyway. Further discussion stymied, as the anthropologists argued among themselves over the meaning of history being idealized into matriarchal views.

Mama Ghee is described as old without being infirm and can change between snake and Vicollan at will.

Myths

Like all VicollanFolklore, Mama Ghee stories are descended from oral tradition, with little if any changes over the centuries. They are the very popular and are requested by all ages. Common stories are:

*Mama Ghee Tames the Food (invention of the now vital Vicollan agriculture)

*How Mama Ghee Got Her Children (a more adult story, though not for the reason you'd expect, a tamer version is often told by children to scare younger siblings)

*The Big Burn
